Paws and FinsThank you Paws & Fins Pet Shop for sponsoring our weekly Animal Tales feature.

Amelia, who came from our Ocean Shores adoption partner, was left in an apartment building lobby with a note that said, “We can’t take care of her any longer.” She was in rough shape, with patches of missing furr, scabbed and itchy skin, and a lump on her foot. She was very withdrawn and seemed to have given up on life.

The shelter staff recognized that Amelia would need a lot of care and time to come around physically and emotionally. They called us because they know that we have no time limit on how long a cat can stay with us. We will do whatever we can to make our cats’ lives as happy as possible while we work to find them the perfect home.

A vet removed and biopsied the lump on her foot and determined it to be the result of autoimmune problems. The vet said that considering her condition when she arrived it was no surprise her immune system was out of whack. She was successfully treated with antibiotics and steroids. A grain-free diet allowed her skin to heal and her lush medium-length coat to grow back, revealing the beautiful girl she is—a dilute torbie with white on her chest, belly, and feet and gorgeous green eyes. In good health again, she keeps herself well groomed.

Amelia has spent quite a while in a foster home. She prefers life without other felines and loved not having other cats around and the freedom to choose whichever windowsill or pillow she wanted. She would keep tabs on her foster parent and follow her to various rooms to watch her cook, make the bed, and brush her teeth. Amelia is a very quiet and reserved girl. She doesn’t like to be picked up. But her foster parent said that on numerous occasions Amelia would come find her, plop down in front of her, and roll over exposing her belly for a rub. Sometimes she would sit next to her for pets.

Amelia’s perfect home would be a quiet one where she is allowed to set the pace. Understandably, she has trust issues with people, and she needs patience and understanding.
